About Us
A Little History
The Hungry Hollow Co-op was begun as a buying club in 1973 by a group of parents associated with the Green Meadow Waldorf School. Their original intention was to work cooperatively to provide the healthiest food available at the lowest possible price.
We are committed to selling biodynamic and organic produce and environmentally sound household products and to supporting community-based activities beyond the confines of the store.
Our Mission
We, the owner / members and the staff of the Hungry Hollow Co-op, are dedicated to providing, at a just value, the healthiest foods available, in an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness.
We encourage the production and use of biodynamic and organic foods and products that promote health in individuals and the local and worldwide environment.
We strive to cultivate a rich community life, locally and regionally, through education and participation in the cooperative form of business.
We seek to serve an ever-growing and diverse community of people by providing access to the healthy foods, products and quality of life we espouse.
We support the responsibility of business to positively transform society and the use of profit to fuel socially minded initiatives; we seek mutual responsibility and fairness in our relationships with suppliers, staff and customers.

Board Member: Donald Samick
Donald Samick grew up in Tenafly, NJ. After high school he worked in a luncheonette and soon advanced to be a manager with a staff of 14, learning all the essentials of running a business. He also took courses in business administration. Donald was very successful, but he felt unfulfilled and so he enrolled at the Brooklyn Institute of Design and Construction, studying architecture following a dream.
One day he stopped for a meal at the Tenafly Diner on his way home and ran into his former baseball coach. Donald shared that he was looking for work to help pay for his tuition. The coach mentioned that the Lamb Studios, where he worked in selling stained glass windows and church interior designs, were looking for an assistant draftsman. The next day, with his drawings in tow, Donald was interviewed by the chief designer, George de Ris, and hired “on the spot”. It was due to this connection that Donald was introduced to Anthroposophy and Waldorf education.
Donald worked at the studios until the death of the owner. By 1970, at the young age of twenty-six, Donald found himself owner of the Lamb Studios, which he operated for over fifty years.
Today Donald Samick is retired. He has four children, which all went to Waldorf School, first to Green Meadow and later to the Hawthorne Valley school.
